Last Saturday two coaches from Otley travelled to the East coast for what was expected to be the biggest test for Otliensians so far this season. Their opponents Bridlington are far more accustomed to the dizzy heights of the North East leagues or even Yorkshire 1, rather than Yorkshire 2 where they find themselves this season. Plenty of speculation surrounds their demise over the last few years, but they seem to have found a level at the top of Yorkshire 2.
Bridlington's ground at Dukes Park had the air of a semi-professional set up and their convivial supporters were most welcoming.
With a bumper home crowd, the East coast boys were clearly set on maintaining their unbeaten home record. They were certainly a well organised squad; their line-outs were faultless and their big centres defended powerfully. Every time Ensians started to build some momentum their ambitions were tempered by their yellow hooped opponents, or stopped in their tracks by a shrill blow of the officious referee’s whistle. Keen to lecture players on their infringements rather than letting play flow.
At the break the home side lead by just 1 unconverted try. The low scoring second half was a steaming battle with bodies strewn across the now muddy field. The home side managed to add a penalty and importantly maintain their choke hold on the blues. Not a pretty game to watch, as Otliensians didn’t have the space to shine. All credit to Brid’, their unwavering determination frustrated Ensians in every department and maintained their unblemished home record.
For Ensians, Captain Luke Exley and Alex Powell stood out in the forwards, while Harry Wales at outside centre made tackling look like his favourite pastime.
Another big game awaits next week when Ensians entertain old rivals Halifax at home. 2:15 pm KO
