With three key backs missing from last Saturday’s line up, Ensians home supporters arrived at Chaffers field with a tinge of trepidation. Thankfully their concerns were unfounded as the boys went on to maintain their unbeaten record. New forward Alex Powell was a welcome addition to the squad, starting at flanker rather than his usual second row position.
As was expected the opponents, Bramley Phoenix, played an upright physical game. Constantly pushing off-side, with a flat ‘rugby league’ style back-line. The very capable referee didn’t let this spoil the flow of play, choosing instead to ignore multiple infringements and let play go on, resulting in a decent spectacle. From the onset Ensians gave the visitors little space to build up a head of steam and whenever were in possession looked dangerous.
Captain Luke Exley opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark, as he powered his way over from 5m out. The conversion by no means easy, looked effortless with Jake Bentley’s current form.
Bramley rallied and made several breaks down the right wing. Thankfully replacement winger Charlie Tucker made some excellent tackles, but eventually Bramley’s full back, wing combination broke through to score an unconverted try, narrowing the lead to just 2 points. Five minutes before the break, it was becoming clear the new 3 substitute limit would be a challenge for the visitors, already with two suspected head injuries, cracks were starting to appear in their composure.
Just before the break Bramley were struggling to clear their line and in the melee their centre passed the ball straight to fly half Ollie Eaves. Reacting quickly Eaves flung the ball out to Harry wales and onto Jake Bentley. With winger Isaac Gillson to his right, Jake dummied right, before stepping inside, wrong footing the would be tackler. To the cheers of the touch side fans, Bentley cruised under the posts. His conversion took the score to 14:5 at the break.
Ensians managed to increase their lead in the second half with two tries courtesy of Ali Campbell and Harry Wales and one further conversion. The scoreline closed at a respectable 26:5.
