WETHERBY 29 Points Versus OLD OTLIENSIANS 10 Points
‘Ensians travelled to Wetherby with hopes of
continuing their winning run having drawn at home to Wetherby earlier in
the season. A very strong cross wind promised to make handling difficult
and this proved to be the case.
‘Ensians made a promising start through a fine kick to touch by fly half
Kristian Keinhorst, pinning the hosts in their own 22 for some minutes.
However ‘Ensians gave away a penalty allowing Wetherby to relieve the
pressure and soon afterwards slack tackling enabled the strong home
centres to break through, resulting in the score of a converted try
beneath the posts.
’Ensians struck back and after camping on the Wetherby line for some
minutes flanker Sam Featherstone broke through the home defence to score
an unconverted try half way through the first half. Play was very scrappy
with Wetherby on top for the rest of the first half, scoring two
unconverted tries making the half time score 17 points to 5 in favour of
the hosts.
Immediately after half time the Wetherby backs combined well to score an
unconverted try in the corner and 15 minutes later scored a converted try
near the posts following more weak tackling from the visitors making the
score 29—5.
Led by skipper Sam Gray and ably supported by ‘Ensians man-of-the-match
scrum half Rob Lofthouse who had tackled brilliantly for the whole game,
‘Ensians then came into their own and took the game to the hosts scoring a
fine unconverted try wide out by winger Nick Keinhorst and coming near on
more than one occasion. However, on the day, Wetherby were worthy winners
by a rather flattering score of 29 points to 10.
