Ensians take part in Ossett Pre-season
Rugby Tournament
As part of preparations
for the season, ‘Ensians were invited to take part in this four-team
tournament where each team played every other team with games lasting 25
minutes.
Knaresborough were their first opponents and ‘Ensians took the lead
through a fine try from Ali Campbell after a deft chip ahead from fly half
Matt Tenniswood. As ‘Ensians struggled to settle, Knaresborough levelled
the score with a try and kicked a penalty to win the game 8 – 5.
‘Ensians then faced the hosts Ossett and took the lead through two
well-struck penalties from Matt Tenniswood. The home side pressed with the
slope in their favour to produce a well-worked try through their backs,
the conversion giving them a 7 – 6 lead which they clung to until the
final whistle.
From the squad of 22 players, Coach John Walker re-jigged the side for the
final game against Stanley Rodillians. The combination clicked and they
ran in five tries through scrum-half Sam Featherstone, centre Dale
Kennedy, fly half Rob Lofthouse, winger Josh Butterill and full back Matt
Tenniswood. The latter converted one try with hooker Rob Lyon kicking a
penalty in the 30 – 0 victory.
Winners of the tournament were Ossett with ‘Ensians finishing second and
leading points scorers. Coach John Walker said “I was pleased with the
performance of this young side and I felt that their fitness and skills
came to the fore as the tournament progressed”.
‘Ensians first league match is away to Harrogate Pythons on the 3rd
September.
