This is Otley - News
15/12/2005

A young Otley rugby player who was seriously injured while playing has thanked everyone for supporting his fund-raising appeal. Paul Deeley is still being treated in hospital after being injured while playing for Old Otiiensians RUFC in September 2004.

Since the accident, the club has organised a variety of fund raising events and collections for its Paul Deeley Fund - the running total of which now standing at £2,000.

Paul, his family and the club say they would like to thank all those businesses in Otley, and their customers, for their "tremendous" support.

Honorary Treasurer of Old Qtliensians, Gordon Longfellow, said: "More than 15 months on from the accident, Paul is still in hospital, but both he and his family have been heartened recently by the news that he could visit the family home for a few hours each week.

The many collection buckets in businesses, shops and pubs in the town will be there until the end of the rugby season in April when it is expected that the main fund-raising activities will end.

The fund-raising group Is therefore hopeful that support for Paul with contributions of any size, large or small, will continue to that time. Special events at the club and around town have also been well supported and the club would especially like to thank local musicians Glen Folk, the Restless Natives and Dave Vermond for giving their time and talents to support the appeal.

Otley Rugby Club's offer of a collection at its match against local rivals Doncaster was also very much appreciated.

For the moment, Paul his family and the club would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Other events planned for the New Year include a Valentines evening (where 'Elvis' may  make an appearance), an Easter Bonnet Parade and Fun Day, and a Gala Dinner and Auction at the Headingley Experience in April.

More details will be announced nearer the time.
