Hornsea 7 vs 47 OORUFC

‘Ensians travelled to Hornsea knowing that a victory would guarantee promotion to Yorkshire 3 .There would ,however ,be more work to do in future weeks to secure the League Championship for which they have strived all season.

It was a bright sunny day with a sharp breeze blowing across a good pitch ideal for fast open rugby.’Ensians played down the slight slope in the first half and after only five minutes a fine movement across the backs resulted in Joe Hatton scoring an unconverted try. Five minutes later following good forward play the ball was released to the backs and Callum Doherty scored another unconverted try to make the score 10-nil to the visitors. Ben Hatton then kicked a penalty to increase the score to 13-nil.

Although Hornsea were trying hard they were neither strong enough nor fast enough to contain the ‘Ensians who scored two more tries before half time the first by Lee O, ‘Donnell after a good combined movement between the forwards and backs and the second by prop forward Greg Jones converted by Ben Hatton. This made a half time score of 25 points to nil in favour of the visitors.

‘Ensians started the second half in full stride but a neat interception by Hornsea who won the race to the line gave them a converted try making the score 7 points to 25.’Ensians immediately replied with Joe Hatton’s second try of the game .’Ensians were camped in the home team’s half for much of the remainder of the match scoring three more tries [one converted].The first was a classic forwards try taking a lineout on the Hornsea 22 followed by a driving maul for Ross Nichols to score. The forwards were again to the fore in creating the next try when Ross Nichols crashed over for his second try of the match.

Finally with the last move of the game Lee O’Donnell recycled the ball to the backs and man of the match Luke Freer crossed the line to score a lovely try converted by Kristian Keinhorst giving a final score of 7 points to 47 in favour of ‘Ensians to earn them a well deserved league promotion. It had been an entertaining game well refereed by Graeme Bentley but as hard as Hornsea tried they were unable to combat the speedy ‘Ensian team.

‘Ensians visit Keighley 2nds in the first round of their defence of the Aire/Wharfe Cup on the evening of 1st April K.O. 6.30 .

Pete's Report

Ensians arrived at Knaresborough only to find they were 1 car load of players short as they were lost in the vast oasis that is Knaresborough ! & they had a sat nav. Knaresborough had a young team with with some older experienced players in there to make for a good mix. With 4 players short ensians played the first 10 minutes using the 3 subs they had & team manager pete tempest. Ensians 2nds welcomed tobias gill, kieron walker & liam walker for their first games for the 2nds & they played like seasoned pros. Ensians played into the wind in the first half & the first 5 minutes was ensians driving at the Knaresborough defence through big eddy , tony myers, bonner & craig mawson with the backrow of tempo, kieron & cheesy being thorns in knaresboroughs side. Rich crossley was everywhere as usual pushing his troops on. Knaresborough were using the wind & pushing ensians back into their own half using the kick & chase with their young backs, & after a stray pass the Knaresborough prop kicked the ball on to score under the posts. With conversion ensians were 7 – 0 down. From the kick off ensians tore into Knaresborough with jonny rah using new centre partnership ken lui & tobias gill to make the hard yards while backrow new boy kieron walker with cheesy were there to set up the ball for the big boys to drive on. After some good interplay with forwards & backs, with full back ben smith running great lines to break the defence, powerful no 8 pete tempest drove over the line taking many defenders with him but couldn’t ground the ball. Knaresborough came back & after a good backs move & some slack tackling the knaresboroughs centre scored under the posts. With conversion they were 14 – 0 up. With the lost boys arriving changes were made, & with jonny rah scything through a gap, tobias & ken split the defence for ben smith to run through & score under the posts. With conversion it was 14 – 7. From the kick off ensians came straight back & jonny rah used his book of tricks to find a gap where there wasn’t one, tobias & ben smith added some pace & ken made some space before putting the winger andraos away. He rounded his man & went in at the corner, but with no conversion it was 14 – 12. On 35 minutes with the big boys charging up the field & drawing in the Knaresborough defence, rich crossley put young kieron away, who beat a few players before putting tobias in for a try. With missed conversion it was 14 – 17 to ensians, but Knaresborough came straight back & scored just before half time using their classy centre to make it 21 – 17 going into the 2nd half. From the kick off ensians started where they had finished & a break by ben smith was taken on by connor paley & craig mawson before ken lui cut back inside to score wide out. With a missed conversion ensians were just in front 22 – 21. Knaresborough tore into ensians from the kick off & after turning over the ball there open side flanker who was there man of the match kicked ahead & out paced the cover to score, & with the conversion made it 28 – 22. Ensians came straight back & after another jonny rah break on 60 minutes good hands by backs & forwards with tony myers showing the way, made room for ken lui to power through for his 2nd try. With the conversion needed to take the lead tobias gill put it through the sticks to take the lead 29 – 28. Ensians were now playing there best rugby with players looking for the pass or off load & adam baird, liam walker – on his first union game after playing league were making the Knaresborough defence creak, while pete bonner – a prop as traditional as meat & potato pie, threw a dummy, added a little shimmy, put the gas on & it was bye bye Vienna to the 2 knaresborough defenders. Pulling in the defence, liam walker took it on before sending kieron away for his first try for the club. With no conversion it was 34 – 28 to ensians. They knew they had to keep the pressure on & after a big drive from adam baird from a scrum, taken on by the forwards, cheesy the hard working backrow forward sneaked down the side of a maul & forced his way over. From in front of the posts toby libra some how missed, but at 39 – 28 on 70 minutes it was about keeping up the pressure. Knaresborough came back but ensians wasn’t going to make it easy & after another turn over, connor paleybroke through & went on a mazy run from half way line, beating several players to score in the corner to make the final score 44 – 28. A fantastic game where, until the last 15 minutes could of gone either way, played in good spirit with ken lui getting man of the match for his first game in the centre, & kieron walker playing his first senior game having a cracker ! sam Featherstone – beware
