Hornsea 8 vs OORUFC 15

Despite kicking off with a strong wind in their favour, ‘Ensians came up against a spirited start by the hosts and they were on the back foot for the first ten minutes. They also suffered the loss of lock Ali Campbell through injury with flanker Lee O’Donnell deputising and young replacement Ken Luu filling the gap in the back row. The visitors gradually settled and took the lead with a penalty by centre Will Foster, but Hornsea responded with a well-worked try on 25 minutes giving them a slender 5 – 3 advantage.

A long kick downfield by full back Kristian Keinhorst set up an attacking lineout for the visitors and a good drive by the pack gave hooker Rob Lyon the chance to force his way over. The conversion failed, but ‘Ensians were in front at 8 – 5 at the break.

Injury struck again for the visitors with the loss of lock Ed McIlroy and centre Luke Cowdell early in the second half, with Luke Freer and Tobias Gill deputising. Facing the elements ‘Ensians had to batten down the hatches as the East Coast side launched attack after attack. They were rewarded with a penalty to level the score at 8 – 8 on 50 minutes.

The visiting back row of Sam Featherstone, Rob Arbuckle and Ken Luu were always in the thick of it, driving forward and turning over opposition ball. With both locks injured it was left to Featherstone to produce good lineout ball. Using good offloads, the visiting pack made ground up the left flank and then centre Will Foster linked up to take the ball on before being tackled in the home 22. Lively prop Ben Copley was backing up well to scoop up the ball and go over half way out, with the conversion by Foster putting the visitors in front at 15 – 8 on 67 minutes.

With the visiting front row of Toby Barltrop, Rob Lyon and Ben Copley holding their own in the scrums and flankers Featherstone and the energetic Luu causing all sorts of problems with Hornsea’s attempts to move the ball, it was a case of non-stop defence for the last ten minutes against the wind. Sound tackling from centres Tobias Gill and Will Foster and wingers Nathan Rogers and Josh Howarth knocked the confidence out of the Hornsea attacks allowing ‘Ensians to control the game and the 15 – 8 winning margin until the final whistle.

Hampered by injuries, this was a very spirited effort by ‘Ensians resulting in a well-deserved victory with Featherstone, Rogers and Arbuckle producing top-drawer performances to keep the side in third place in their League.
