Ensians  met probably their toughest opposition of the season from Doncaster who started the scoring with a breakaway try after 3 minutes. They then put pressure on the visitors for over 10 minutes and were unfortunate when Tony Myers was held up over the line  after the forwards had forced their way over.

Injuries to Tony Myers and Mark Copping weakened the team resulting in Doncaster’s speedy backs scored again from 60 yards to be followed by 2 further tries. However Ensians backs had a great movement resulting in Richard Cuff scoring a good try converted by Matt Tenniswood. Two more tries gave a half time score of 7—40.

Despite the score Ensians spent much of the time in the opposition half holding their own in the tight and loose with Richard Crossley Ben Smith and Andy Rocket prominent and Brett Tenniswood getting lineout ball. The backs had the thankless task of tackling the speedy Doncaster backs who were way above normal 2nd team standard, but half backs Aiden Carr and Matt Tenniswood did well and Richard Cuff scored an unconverted try in the second half. The Doncaster stand off who scored 7 tries was Jonny Woodward former Sheffield Eagles rugby league player. The final score was 12—69, Doncaster scoring 6 more tries in the second half.

Significantly, Doncaster Phoenix 1st XV went down 57 – 0 to Skipton, a side they had previously beaten, whereas the Phoenix 2nd XV big win at ‘Ensians improved their chances of topping Merit Table 3.
