Having pulled off a comfortable win against Mods at home the previous week, ‘Ensians knew that, with several key players missing, things might be very different in the away encounter. Playing up the slope, the visitors soon felt the power of the home pack and the trusty boot of their fly-half.

Play was fairly even in the early stages, but on 12 minutes, the hosts took a 3 point lead with a drop goal and for ‘Ensians, full back Kristian Keinhorst responded with a well-struck penalty three minutes later to level the scores. The visiting back row of Tom Dyson, Rob Arbuckle and Lee O’Donnell foraged well, but any spilled ball was hoofed back into their own 22.

A good move produced a converted try for the home side on 25 minutes and they increased their lead with a penalty to give them a 13 – 3 advantage at the break. With the benefit of the slope in the second half, ‘Ensians were optimistic about turning things round and Kristian Keinhorst kicked another penalty to make the score 13 – 6 to the hosts on 45 minutes.

However, by now, Modernians were playing with much more determination and two further penalties on 47 and 60 minutes lifted their lead to 19 – 6. In the lineouts, although Tom Dyson and lock Brett Tenniswood competed well, scrum half Sam Featherstone and his replacement Aiden Carr had problems getting the ball away quickly. The visitors just about held their own in the scrums, but again ball tended to be untidy.

For the home side, both forwards and backs were now playing confidently together and, despite resolute tackling from visiting centres Dominic Oddy and Andy Bower along with winger Toby Gillatt, Mods engineered two tries on 65 and 70 minutes. The conversions gave them a comfortable lead of 33 – 6. ‘Ensians battled on resolutely for the last ten minutes, but were unable to make any inroads into the tight home defence.
