Otliensians welcomed Halifax Vandals for the first league game of the 2009/10 season.

After recruiting several players, Otliensians had a new look to what is a well established team and it was an impressive victory and the young side will look to improve as the season progresses.

Otliensians started the game as the brighter of the two sides. The Ensians men made an immediate impression at the first scrum and continued to dominate their opponents for the rest of the game, pushing their opponents back yards. Otliensians went ahead through a converted try by Duggan, some three minutes later Fozzard converted a penalty to take the score 10 0 to Otliensians.

Halifax continued to give away needless penalties and were fortunate to keep all fifteen players on the field. After twenty-two minutes, Halifax converted a penalty to make the score 10 3. At thirty minutes Arbuckle replaced Woods for Otliensians after Woods suffered a shoulder injury. Otliensians turned around at half time 17 6 ahead.

Otliensians kicked off in the second half with the wind in their favour and were soon on the attack. Nick Keinhorst scored in the corner and there were further tries by Hammond and Holland.

Final score was Old Otliensians 43, Halifax Vandals 6. This performance was very convincing and bodes well for the future of Otliensians. It is hard to say which player should be named man of the match as the whole team equipped themselves well and worked unselfishly together. Otliensians will however have to improve on their discipline and not concede needless penalties.
