With the 1st and 3rd team games at Old Modernians called off because of unfit fields, the 2nd XV's were lucky to play this 2nd XV League game at Chaffers Fields on a heavy wet field , the 1st XV pitch being partially covered in water.

From the outset it was clear that the teams were evenly matched and play swung from end to end throughout the game with territory usually established by a penalty. Mid way through the first half Modernians took the lead with a very well struck penalty from halfway but the scores were equalised just before the break with a penalty from fullback Mattie Tenniswood.

The Ensians front row dominated the scrums with some excellent strikes against the head by hooker Ross Myers but the lineouts were very evenly contested throughout.

In the second half despite the conditions both sides played some attractive rugby and an Otliensian three-quarter move was completed by Tenniswood who scored in the corner. The try was not converted. Ensians brought on some substitutes in the second half , Rob Grey and Lee O'Donnell. With 10 mins to go the visitors reduced the arrears with a penalty after a period of pressure and continued to work hard for the winning score. The Ensians broke out of defence to come close but it was Modernians who ended the game on the attack with the home side defending well.

For Otliensians the backrow of Dale Kennedy, Joe Robinson and Lance Armstrong played well as did Tim Rushfirth in the centre and Ian Chaplin at stand off. Ben Smith and Andy Bower also contributed well and the whole team defended stoutly when required.

Next Saturday the 1st XV are at home to Burley in the League, the 2nd XV are away at Burley and the 3rd XV are scheduled to play York RI 3rd at home.

Before the game a minutes silence was held for long time Club member and Vice - President Peter Lodge who died during the week. Pete, in times past, had served on the Committee, been Social Secretary and run the Colts team. He was also quite famous for his excellent posters advertising Club events. The Club's thoughts are with his wife Pam, sons Jarrod and Jonas and families, at this time.
